Spay/Neuter
What is the easiest and single most important thing you can do to alleviate the tragedy of homeless cats and dogs and the needless killing - so-called "euthanasia" - of healthy, adoptable companion animals?
SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR PET!
You do not have to pay hundreds of dollars at a full service vet. There are many low-cost spay-neuter clinics. Even if you think you can place the puppies and the kittens... remember, allowing a litter of cats or dogs to be brought into the world is a death warrant for the cats and dogs already in a shelter waiting for a home.
Cats can reproduce at only four months of age, have an average 3-4 kittens per litter and may produce 2-3 litters per year! Do not let this happen to your cat!
According to the Humane Society of the Unites States (HSUS) About 2.4 million healthy, adoptable cats and dogs—about one every 13 seconds—are put down in U.S. shelters each year. Often these animals are the offspring of cherished family pets. Spay/neuter is a proven way to reduce pet overpopulation, ensuring that every pet has a family to take care of them.

Do not wait until it's too late. Cats can reproduce as early as four months of age and dogs at only six months. A major component of any shelter population is unwanted kitten and puppies and unsterilized cats and dogs.
Your pet, male or female, will be healthier and live longer if spayed of neutered. This will also prevent undesirable behavior such as spraying, barking, caterwauling and running off. Neutered pets, especially males, are also less vulnerable to theft because dogs and cats are often stolen to be used by backyard breeders and puppy mills.
If there were not so many cats and dogs in shelters as a consequence of people not getting them fixed. it would be much easier to recover lost pets and they could be held much longer.
Feral (undomesticated) Cats
Are you feeding some stray cats? Do you care about feral cats or the sorry number of strays in your community? Have you heard about the most effective and humane method for controlling the proliferation of feral cats? It is called "TNR" (Trap-Neuter-Release)? Learn about TNR and Alley Cat Allies.
There are numerous local organizations that help feral cat caretakers and certain vet clinics that are "feral friendly". For a list of organizations willing to help you with trapping, fixing and/or caretaking for free-roaming TNR organizations, go to: http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/feral_cats/tips/feral_cat_organizations.html
